Learn — Copy-Trading & Trader Evaluation
Understand copy-trading, how to evaluate a trader's real performance and risk, and why leader results differ from follower results.
What is Copy-Trading?
Copy-trading lets you automatically mirror another trader's positions using your own capital. Instead of researching and executing every trade yourself, you follow a trader and your account moves with theirs.
The catch: your results are not the leader's results. Fees, copying latency, position size and entry timing all create differences. That's why the value of a platform like CMI is helping you evaluate the trader before you follow — not just showing you who is green this week.
The Traders section covers copy-trading leaders on major exchanges; the Vaults section covers on-chain managed capital pools, which work differently.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is copy-trading?+
Copy-trading automatically mirrors a chosen trader's positions using your own capital. On CMI you evaluate traders before following them — historical performance, drawdown, risk and follower outcomes — because following blindly is how people get hurt.
Can I lose money copy-trading?+
Yes, absolutely. If the trader you copy loses, you lose proportionally. Drawdown shows how much a strategy has historically dropped. Never copy with money you can't afford to lose, and don't follow a trader just because they had a good week.
Is the leader's return the same as my return?+
No. Leader performance is not follower performance. Fees, copying latency, position sizing and entry timing all make your results differ from the leader's — sometimes a lot.
How do I evaluate a trader?+
Look at history over more than one period, check maximum drawdown (deep drops are dangerous), follower outcomes, and risk summary. Prefer consistent results over a single lucky spike. We mark anything without verifiable data as N/A rather than guessing.
Why do you show risk heuristics instead of a score?+
A single score is easy to game and oversimplifies. We prefer transparent components — return, drawdown, health and mismatch signals — so you can see the reasoning, not just a number.
Is this financial advice?+
No. CMI provides independent data and research tools, not investment advice. Please do your own research and consult a professional before following anyone.
Copy-trading is high-risk. Past performance does not guarantee future results. Follower results differ from leader results. Data is sourced from official exchange APIs; unavailable fields are marked Not Available.
